SeagullProject - Lamer Island/The Battery

Artist impression of the BatteryThe battery on Lamer Island is considered to be one of the key development opportunities for Dunbar Harbour Trust. The site provides an ideal location for visitor attractions such as a visitor centre, an exhibition area for exhibiting local arts and crafts, a chandlery for sale of sailing and diving equipment and perhaps a small cafe or restaurant.

The plan is to retain a walkway around the inside of the battery walls for visitors to enjoy the views and see the original characteristics and structure of the battery walls themselves. Access to this walkway would be from an inner building which would contain the facilities and attractions referred to previously.

This is clearly a very ambitious project for the Trust to undertake. Support in principle has been given for the development of the Battery by East Lothian Council and Historic Scotland subject to a full survey being carried out to determine whether the site has any historical or archaeological significance which will need to be preserved.

Funding for this stage in the development has been obtained from the Big Lottery and it is hoped that further funding will be available for future development phases.
